Our Journey

Balaknama’s journey is a testament to the courage, determination, and leadership of street and working children who refused to remain unheard. What began as a small movement has grown into a nationally recognized platform that brings the voices of the most marginalized to the forefront.

January 2016 onwards

Balaknama continues to be published monthly — originally in Hindi and translated into English — amplifying children’s voices consistently and powerfully.

2015

Balaknama was featured in the Limca Book of Records as a national record — recognized as the only newspaper in India written and published by street children.

January 2014 – December 2015

The newsletter shifted to a monthly publication, reflecting growing participation and increased stories from children in different cities.

From 2014 till date

To expand its reach, an English translated version of the newsletter was introduced, making it accessible to readers across India and abroad

2003 – 2014

Balaknama was published quarterly in Hindi, sharing real-life stories, concerns, and achievements of children living and working on the streets.

September 2003

Balaknama was launched to ensure the voices of street children are represented in society and the system — written by children, for children

July 9, 2002

Badhte Kadam (Stepping Forward), a federation of street and working children, was formed by 35 children — laying the foundation for a movement led by children themselves.
